BECOME A POWER-USER 🏆 Maximize the full potential of WhatConverts! Learn How
WhatConverts isn't just a product—it's a team. And without that team, we know we'd be nowhere.
That's why each month, we recognize one team member who's gone above and beyond in their role, and we share a little bit about who they are and what makes them so integral to WhatConverts. (They also get a bit of free swag from our merch store!)
This month, our spotlight employee is Amanda Pell, Content Marketing Manager.
How did you first get into the SaaS or tech industry, or what led you to WhatConverts?
My path to tech was a bit of a roundabout one—I actually started as a branded content writer for B2C companies like Nature Valley and the NFL before moving into SEO and content marketing strategy. As I worked my way up I started naturally gravitating toward taking on more B2B/SaaS clients, so when I decided to move in-house, the tech industry was my natural first choice.
Is there something unique about working on our team that you find exciting?
There’s something incredibly satisfying about marketing a product that directly makes users money. Most SaaS platforms are designed to have a more indirect impact, which is valuable, but it’s a little bit of a tougher sell when it comes to convincing people that it’s worth their investment. With WhatConverts, we’re marketing a tool that actually puts money directly into users’ pockets, which is not only an easier story for us to tell but it feels better telling it, too. Especially since so many of our clients are independent businesses, it feels good to know we’re promoting a product that directly increases the amount of money users are able to take home or reinvest in their companies.
This could be a specific individual contribution, a customer success story, or a team accomplishment.
I’m currently leading a project to overhaul and reorganize our Help Center, which I’m very excited about. I’m a big information design nerd so developing a new informational hierarchy is a passion project for me, and the end result should make it drastically easier for users to find the information they need to be able to use the platform to its fullest potential. The project is still in progress, but it’s something I’ll be very proud of when it’s finished.
Tell us what you like to do, and how you maintain work-life balance.
I live in sunny San Diego, so pretty much year-round you can find me on my balcony with my dog and a good book any time I have a moment of free time. I’m also a pretty avid birder—I’m up to 137 species and I always have my binoculars on me.
It can be anything—from an interesting fact, to a hidden talent, to quirky hobbies.
This surprises most people since I don’t come across like much of a sports person, but I’m a play-by-play announcer for roller derby in San Diego. Last year I announced the banked track national championships in Los Angeles and was the voice of Team California at the regional all-star championships in Michigan. It’s the coolest thing I do, by far!
Perhaps you want to code like a pro, master the art of PPC, or pick up a non-work-related hobby?
I’ve lived in California for almost seven years and I still don’t know how to surf, so if I could remedy that instantaneously, I would.
This can be work-related (like a tool or trend) or something personal (foods, pets, places, TV shows - anything!).
I’m originally from New York and just spent about a month there, so I’m currently obsessed with figuring out whether it’s possible to find a real bagel on the West Coast. I’ve been thinking about moving back east, and if I can’t get my hands on a good quality bagel out here, that might be my only option.
How has this advice helped shape your life or your career?
This isn't advice I received personally, but on his last episode of The Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien said, "If you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." This was while he was very publicly losing his show in what many considered an unfair situation, and it stuck with me that he could be in the middle of losing everything he had worked for and still stand by the idea that so long as you had hard work and kindness, you’d find your way. That became more or less my guiding principle throughout my career, and it’s carried me through challenging times and brought some truly amazing opportunities into my life.
(This is a great opportunity to highlight a unique skill, or stead-fast know-how!)
Diagramming sentences. Sentence diagrams had already been completely phased out of most curriculums by the time I was in school, and the only reason I learned how to do them is because I happened to have an English teacher who was unusually passionate about teaching them. So purely from a logistics perspective, it’s going to be pretty tough for the folks running this competition to round up 100 sentence diagramming experts for me to compete with. They’ve come in extremely handy in my career as a writer so I’m still pretty confident that I could win, but it’s more of a strategic choice than anything.
